…as new charity survey reveals dangerous knowledge gap amongst UK women.
For years now, we have been supporting The Eve Appeal to fight women’s cancers with our Femcare™ feminine hygiene units.
This September, The Eve Appeal launched a survey story to try and raise awareness of Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month (GCAM). They used the hashtag #vaginadialogues on social media to get women talking more openly about the symptoms of gynaecological cancers.
The story focused on the dangerous lack of knowledge amongst UK women about the signs and symptoms of gynaecological cancers, and their reluctance to talk to friends, family and even GPs about gynaecological issues due to embarrassment. The survey also highlighted a gap in knowledge and attitudes towards gynaecological health between women of different age groups, with young women being less educated about, and more reluctant to discuss, gynaecological health problems.
Despite enormous progress in medicine, each year 20,000 new cases of gynaecological cancer are diagnosed in the UK, and sadly there are over 7,600 related deaths. Research is the key to changing this.
The survey found that one in five women aged 16-25 years surveyed couldn’t name a single correct symptom of any of the five gynaecological cancers.
